Maggie Sokolik, Ph.D. was born in Olympia, Washington. She is a writer/editor living in the Bay Area. She graduated from Reed College in Portland, Oregon, and received a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from UCLA. She teaches writing at UC Berkeley.
She is also the instructor for a popular online course, Principles of Written English, offered through edx.org. This class is offered for English language learners and writers around the world, and has attracted tens of thousands of students. Her book Principles of Written English are companion textbooks for the course.
College Writing 2x is a popular online university-level academic writing course from edX.org, which has enrolled over 250,000 students since it opened in 2013. These supplementary workbooks, now available in one volume, provide support for the course, which is offered in three parts: How to Write an Essay, English Grammar and Essay Writing, and Academic and Business Writing. The materials can be used during the course or on their own for extra practice. They offer a summary of the material covered during the week as well as extra exercises and resources.
